Overview
The American Revolution was a political movement and military conflict that eventually led to the formation of the United States of America. The American Revolutionary War was fought between British colonists of the North American continent and the British government. The first battle of the war, the Battle of Lexington and Concord, took place on April 19, 1775. On July 4, 1776, representatives of the colonial movement gathered to sign the Declaration of Independence in order to formally declare that they no longer considered the American colonies under British rule. In October of 1781, the British surrendered after the Battle of Yorktown, but the war did not formally end with Britain's recognition of the colonies' independence until the signing of the Treaty of Paris in 1783.
In Video Games
Compared to other military conflicts with American involvement such as the American Civil War and World War II, the American Revolution has been depicted in only a relatively few games. Some of these titles are below:
Liberty or Death
The Koei title Liberty or Death is a strategy game for the SNES, Genesis, and PC with gameplay heavily based on the style of the company's Romance of the Three Kingdoms series. In the game, the player may either control the colonial or British forces, and if certain criteria are met, special events based on the history of the era will occur as the game proceeds. For example, Benedict Arnold, a colonial officer famous for betraying the American forces and defecting to Britain, has a lower Loyalty rating than other officers in the game and will defect if the player does not appease him through actions such as granting promotions.
Assassin's Creed III
Set during the American Revolution, Assassin's Creed III will feature a protagonist of Native American descent, Connor Kenway. It is at this time unknown how his story will play out against the backdrop of the war.
