He is referring to around 8:30 in the video where patrick is talking about endings and specifically says " I haven't beaten this game"

That sucks, this could have been pretty cool judging from the stuff they first showed off. But it just kept going downhill. It's too bad, cuz like Patrick said, horror games have sucked this generation. If only we could get a Condemned 3 somehow..

I haven't seen a single reason this game is bad, and saying the combat is bad doesn't mean much, no1 plays SH for it's combat sequences

Love seeing the dog ending in SH2. So going off Patrick's reasoning, if you go into Silent Hill with whatever problems you have to see it project those problems, what if those problems are things like addictions to chocolate or Hawaiian pizzas (topped with pineapple & Canadian bacon)? Would Silent Hill just completely break or turn into the food world fantasy from the Simpson's Game? This game would be funny if the ending was something surreal like the main character puts on a pyramid head helmet & just starts tearing up the place.

edit-amazed at the level of jumping of your character to only go about a foot off the ground when going for the ladder

I really wanted this to be good. I've seen a lot of video of it, and it seems so promising.. but all the little screwups just show up all the more strongly in a horror game.

There should never be HUD elements in a horror game, ever, even for saving (exceptions given for tutorial stuff, but there are other ways to do that). That save icon in the corner is highly distracting, "Hey you guys, this is a videogame!". Such a minor thing easily kills the game.

And every time the camera clips on the wall or something weird like that is a terrible moment. I don't think SH can handle the RE4 style camera, especially in a game with a ton of tight corridors. It needs to be a fixed camera to eliminate all variables. Unfortunately, that's probably been focus tested out of existence too.

And then there's quicktime events, ie, "press buttons to not die". I don't know if those have a place in SH, but they probably shouldn't.

It hurts more because It really seems like they genuinely know what they're doing in parts. This looks like the best Silent Hill game in a long time.. but that's not saying much.

Edit: I hate the cult stuff too. Those parts almost ruined SH3 for me.

So... zombies instead of monsters. Lots of fighting. Fighting is crappy. I'll just... I'll just stick to SH2.

I still have no idea why people give Silent Hill 4 so much shit. Okay, I admit it had quite a bit of bad design choices but goddamnit if it didn't have the most unique and awesome story in the series.

For Downpour, I'm definitely checking it out.

You're the man! I loved the story of Silent Hill 4 so much. It has also been the only Silent Hill to give me nightmares.

This, however, doesn't look good. Lame jumpscares, horror tricks that have already been done better in other games (Mannequins in condemned compared to the mineworkers in the beginning of the QL), not a lot of atmosphere going on etc. And no, I'm not one of those Silent Hill purists who insist that every game after 4 sucks.

Overall, I don't see anything terribly wrong with this, based on the QL. The combat may be crap, but frankly engaging in combat in these sorts of games is always crap. I do agree that it seems largely uninspired though. You're some doofy white guy in mysterious foggy-town and dealing with lady cop, shitty monsters and getting around town with poor draw-distance.

It's not bad, it's just boring.

Can I join your club? I also always liked Silent Hill 4 concept and storywise. It's really bad that half the game is an escort mission but the overall story is really cool and the room part makes it feel very special.

Totally agree, I've always had a thoery that the better the combat, the less scary of a game. I, like you dont find Dead Space scary at all because its easy to kill your enemies with you huge plasma canon.

@damnable_fiend:Well, you see, the joke is that they're all like that. Which is why it doing the same thing again /this/ time is uninspired. There's also the part where I don't really have the reverence for SH1 and 2 that everyone else in the horror-gaming world might, but that's kind of tangential to my point on this instance.

Poor combat and crap puzzles have been around even when Team Silent was making these. SH2 has some of the worst puzzles I've ever seen - completely reminiscent of the ladder "puzzle" in this QL. When they couldn't jump up 2 feet to catch the ladder I was instantly reminded of the garbage chute where you had to throw down a 6 pack of canned peaches to dislodge the package in SH2.

It seems like he's quite near the start of the game but he's decided it's going to be bad already.

Jimmy Sterlings wrote a pretty good review on this game and he seems to be quite brutal if a game's shitty.

Already on my second playthrough. It's flawed, but also really great. Better than Homecoming which is much better than Patrick gives it credit for. If you like Silent Hill, give this game a chance. It has a lot of really great ideas.

@RichieJohn: His review on destructoid also mentioned that he 'felt (Silent Hill) Shattered Memories was a travesty'. So guessing the thoughts on this game someone is probably better gauged by if you like Silent Hill to be more like the last few Playstation/Xbox games (SH3 & up) or more like Shattered Memories.

I know that after seeing the quick look I'm definitely going to rent this as it looks interesting though not putting my expectations too high for it to be that great (especially after seeing how it autosaves often yet loads earlier saves instead).

I don't know, I think this looks way better than Shattered Memories. Also, I'd rather have this (distinctly like the old games) combat as opposed to the horrid action sequences of SM. Man, those chase moments were atrocious.

Also, I can't help but feel that Patrick is far too ironic for Silent Hill. I think he's natural disposition would be to dislike it unless it fits a really specific niche.

Wait a minute, the nonsense cult story characters are trying to bring back an Old One? That instantly makes it more tolerable.

Also, Alan Wake needs to go to Silent Hill.
